I’M A COOL MOM
One of the coolest things about starting my intuitive eating journey is that I’m more present with my kids now. It sounds so funny to say but it’s actually a really cool side effect of listening to my body. I feel more in tune with them and when I used to yell and scream at them all the time (don’t get me wrong, I still do, just not as much) I’m now trying to understand why they’re upset in the first place. To be honest, it’s usually because I’m not paying enough attention to them or it’s because I’m not letting them be a kid. (Cue the 20/20 hindsight of me not listening to my body when it was trying to tell me something and not letting it do its natural thing). I started listening and understanding the underlying issue.
Now, I am always in investigation mode. Wondering why I want to eat more or wondering why am not hungry at this time when I normally am. At that point, I investigate instead of hate why I’m going for another bowl of cereal.
I’m learning so much from my kids even just watching them eat. They can be craving something like candy, eat the candy, then leave 3/4 of it on the table. They listen to their bodies and are the kings and queens of intuitive eating because they have no boundaries, no restriction, no expectations of food or food rules themselves. No, WE teach them that. They learn by hearing us berate our bodies while we go on constant diets to try and change ourselves because we don’t feel like we are good enough unless we are smaller.
Between my kids and intuitive eating, I have become more mindful. Although it’s not perfect, (and I know it never will be), I feel these small changes slowly turning me into the Mom that I always wanted to be. Intuitive eating is creating stronger and more positive vibes through all areas of my life.
In my eyes, the best thing we can do for our kids is to work on ourselves. By working on ourselves, we show our kids that we matter and that we are worth the lifelong project to work on ourselves.
We can’t teach them what we don’t know.
